Good Shih Tzu Bathing Techniques Are Essential For Healthy Coats And Skin

Good Shih Tzu Bathing Techniques Are Essential For Healthy Coats And Skin

A good bathing technique is essential for keeping your Shih Tzu’s hair in good shape and keeping skin problems at a minimum. A lot of Shih Tzu owners say they have skin problems. This is a problem I have not encountered a lot in my existence with the Shih Tzu. However, it does happen more in some bloodlines. Follow the instructions in this article and you should have no problem in keeping a nice smelling and clean Shih Tzu in your presence at all times.

Gather together everything that is needed before you start to bath your Shih Tzu. This is always handier than having to run here and there gathering up your supplies and tools once the process begins.

The first bath you give your Shih Tzu may be traumatic. It truly is best to delay bathing Shih Tzu puppies until they are at least 3 months old. For the first bath you might try using a small bowl, dishpan or the kitchen sink rather than the bathtub. Always be sure the water is neither too cold or to hot. Shih Tzu puppies react violently sometimes to either extreme. Be careful your Shih Tzu puppy does not jump or wiggle out of your hands. If the temperature of water is “just right,” there will be less chance of the Shih Tzu puppy wiggling out of your hands. Use a mild shampoo especially formulated for dogs that is “tearless.” Regular baby shampoo can be used. I have never had a problem with dry skin when I used baby shampoo. It is just harder to rinse out. Shampoo formulated especially for dogs and puppies is usually easier to rinse out. I do like using Fluffy Puppy shampoo for puppies and even on the faces of my older Shih Tzu because it is tearless.

Pouring water gently over your Shih Tzu puppy in the kitchen sink, a small bowl or dishpan is much less alarming than using a high powered sprayer. Once your Shih Tzu puppy is use to his bath, you can try using the spray attachment which is much better and faster at getting out all the shampoo. You can also use a gallon milk jug (when it is empty and rinsed out of course) to first pour water over the puppy. After being washed, the Shih Tzu puppy must be dried off completely before being allowed outside again.

An older Shih Tzu can be washed in the bathtub using a shower attachment. Place a rubber mat in the bottom of the tub to provide firm footing just as you would for yourself. Your choice of shampoo and conditioner depends upon the type of coat your Shih Tzu has. Avoid using human shampoo on your Shih Tzu. I have used Pantene, but like the baby shampoo, it is harder to rinse out of the hair and I just don’t like the way it leaves the Shih Tzu’s hair looking dull. Many Shih Tzu are allergic to human shampoo. I have found them to be “itchy” after a bath with human shampoo. I switched over completely to shampoos especially formulated for dogs. Some human shampoos have been known to coat each hair and build up after use, which is probably what causes the itching. There are so many really good brands of dog shampoo on the market these days; there is truly no good reason to use human shampoo on your Shih Tzu. In summertime it is a good idea to use a shampoo to fight against fleas.

Be prepared to get splashed as your Shih Tzu gets older in the bath. Either wear grooming aprons made especially for this function or wrap a large towel around you.

If you are afraid you might get water in the ears of your Shih Tzu, plug the ears with cotton before beginning the bath. Getting water in the ears can cause ear infections.

Really wet down the hair of a Shih Tzu good before applying the shampoo. Pour the shampoo down the middle of the Shih Tzu’s back. As it runs down each side work it into the hair with a squeezing movement of the fingers. Do not rub or massage. The coat is more apt to become tangled with rubbing movements. The best way to get the cleanest hair is to gently squeeze the shampoo through the hair really working up a thick, good lather. You will need to pour a little extra shampoo on each leg and foot, the tail, chest and stomach areas. Lift your Shih Tzu up by the front legs to shampoo the stomach and then wash the chest. Wash the head and face last using the tearless shampoo.

If you are bathing a very dirty Shih Tzu, you will need rinse really well and repeat the process, then rinse really good again.

A good human hair dryer works find for the Shih Tzu. Brush the hair while blowing drying in order to make the hair straight.

Are You Having Troubles Bathing Your Dog?

Are You Having Troubles Bathing Your Dog?

“How do I bathe my dog?” That’s a question that plagues all dog owners. This article will help shed some light on that question. The answer to that question varies with the breed of dog you have and its age, length of skin, and condition as well. Hopefully, we can give you some tips that will go for all breeds.

One of the most important facets of taking care of your dog properly is learning how to bathe your dog. It can create a stressful situation and you can end up hating the time you spend bathing your dog, just as much as your do hates being bathed. If you have the knowledge of how to correctly bathe your dog, then it might create a nice bond for you and your dog.

The bath should last for roughly 15 minutes if done correctly. If you bathe your dog fast, your dog will hate the bath less. The washing can be accomplished in a bathtub, a large enough sink, or outside using a hose or child’s plastic swimming pool, depending on the size of your dog. All of this, of course, depends on how big or small your dog is as well as reactions to water, and training of your dog. The best thing is to bathe your dog in the same place every time otherwise you will risk causing your dog to be insecure and anxious when you bathe it. If your dog is going to be a large dog and right now it’s a puppy, be sure to bathe in the exact location you will give the bath when it grows up. Don’t make the mistake of bathing it in a sink and then moving its spot when it gets larger. Your poor dog will be afraid of bath time and you won’t be able to do a very good job.

If your dog is little or it’s a puppy, then be sure to hold them on the underside. Place their front legs in between your fingers. This will allow you to have a successful bath time with your dog without them running away or putting up a fight. Once you have them secure, wet down your dog. If you can use a shower type attachment on the hose, that would be the best idea. Be sure to get the dog’s skin wet completely before putting the shampoo on. Be sure before you start bath time that the hair is free of tangles or of the hair being matted. If you have a dog that has extremely long hair, be sure that’s checked out for matting especially.

Here are general tips to make bathing your dog a more successful and less stressful activity:

1. Use pet shampoo instead of people shampoo. It’s not that baby shampoo would not be gentle, but dogs have a different pH balance than we do. The dog’s shampoo has two very different points in it regarding the pH than people’s shampoo does. In other words, your dog’s skin could become dried out if you use people shampoo.
2. Bathe your dog one time a month. Some of the breeds of dogs will be able to go even longer. Ask your vet to give you the best information regarding when to bathe your dog.
3. Remember to brush the dog’s coat both before and after the bath.
4. Be sure to protect your dog’s ears by putting cotton balls inside the ears before you bathe them, to keep them from getting an ear infection. Once you are finished you can take the cotton balls out.
5. If you get shampoo accidentally in their eyes, you can wash their eyes out with warm water or you can use saline such as used for contact lenses.
6. When you have finished putting shampoo on your dog, be sure to rinse it out completely, especially in the sensitive areas such as between the toes. Otherwise, they will become irritated and cause your dog to lick itself.
7. Once the bath is over, dry your dog completely. If your dog loves to run around and roll in the grass after its bath it will pick up stuff and totally take away all the work you just did. Just remember, dog’s just love to run around and the grass, and even worse sometimes dirt, just draws the dog to roll in it after a bath.

Hopefully, the information provided gives you an idea of what will make bathing your dog more successful and will allow you to have a bonding experience instead of a horrible event for both dog and you.

Bathing and Clealiness for your Baby

Bathing and Clealiness for your Baby

During infancy.

—————

Cleanliness is essential to the infant’s health. The principal points to which especial attention must be paid by the parent for this purpose are the following:

At first the infant should be washed daily with warm water; and a bath every night, for the purpose of thoroughly cleaning the body, is highly necessary. To bathe a delicate infant of a few days or even weeks old in cold water with a view “to harden” the constitution (as it is called), is the most effectual way to undermine its health and entail future disease. By degrees, however, the water with which it is sponged in the morning should be made tepid, the evening bath being continued warm enough to be grateful to the feelings.

A few months having passed by, the temperature of the water may be gradually lowered until cold is employed, with which it may be either sponged or even plunged into it, every morning during summer. If plunged into cold water, however, it must be kept in but a minute; for at this period, especially, the impression of cold continued for any considerable time depresses the vital energies, and prevents that healthy glow on the surface which usually follows the momentary and brief action of cold, and upon which its usefulness depends. With some children, indeed, there is such extreme delicacy and deficient reaction as to render the cold bath hazardous; no warm glow over the surface takes place when its use inevitably does harm: its effects, therefore, must be carefully watched.

The surface of the skin should always be carefully and thoroughly rubbed dry with flannel, indeed, more than dry, for the skin should be warmed and stimulated by the assiduous gentle friction made use of. For this process of washing and drying must not be done languidly, but briskly and expeditiously; and will then be found to be one of the most effectual means of strengthening the infant. It is especially necessary carefully to dry the arm-pits, groins, and nates; and if the child is very fat, it will be well to dust over these parts with hair-powder or starch: this prevents excoriations and sores, which are frequently very troublesome. Soap is only required to those parts of the body which are exposed to the reception of dirt.

During childhood.

—————-

When this period arrives, or shortly after, bathing is but too frequently left off; the hands and face of the child are kept clean, and with this the nurse is satisfied; the daily ablution of the whole body, however, is still necessary, not only for the preservation of cleanliness, but because it promotes in a high degree the health of the child.

A child of a vigorous constitution and robust health, as he rises from his bed refreshed and active by his night’s repose, should be put into the shower-bath, or, if this excites and alarms him too much, must be sponged from head to foot with salt water. If the weather be very cold, the water may be made slightly tepid, but if his constitution will bear it, the water should be cold throughout the year. Then the body should be speedily dried, and hastily but well rubbed with a somewhat coarse towel, and the clothes put on without any unnecessary delay. This should be done every morning of the child’s life.

If such a child is at the sea-side, advantage should be taken of this circumstance, and seabathing should be substituted. The best time is two or three hours after breakfast; but he must not be fatigued beforehand, for if so, the cold bath cannot be used without danger. Care must be taken that he does not remain in too long, as the animal heat will be lowered below the proper degree, which would be most injurious. In boys of a feeble constitution, great mischief is often produced in this way. It is a matter also of great consequence in bathing children that they should not be terrified by the immersion, and every precaution should be taken to prevent this. The healthy and robust boy, too, should early be taught to swim, whenever this is practicable, for it is attended with the most beneficial effects; it is a most invigorating exercise, and the cold bath thus becomes doubly serviceable.

If a child is of a delicate and strumous constitution, the cold bath during the summer is one of the best tonics that can be employed; and if living on the coast, sea-bathing will be found of singular benefit. The effects, however, of sea-bathing upon such a constitution must be particularly watched, for unless it is succeeded by a glow, a feeling of increased strength, and a keen appetite, it will do no good, and ought at once to be abandoned for the warm or tepid bath. The opinion that warm baths generally relax and weaken, is erroneous; for in this case, as in all cases when properly employed, they would give tone and vigour to the whole system; in fact, the tepid bath is to this child what the cold bath is to the more robust.

In conclusion: if the bath in any shape cannot from circumstances be obtained, then cold saltwater sponging must be used daily, and all the year round, so long as the proper reaction or glow follows its use; but when this is not the case, and this will generally occur, if the child is delicate and the weather cold, tepid vinegar and water, or tepid salt water, must be substituted.

Go Out This Summer with Maternity Bathing Suits

Go Out This Summer with Maternity Bathing Suits

Maternity Bathing Suits are used by women who are pregnant, but a wide variety of Modest Swimwear designs exist. Many designs are demure for those who wish to cover up, but others are just as skimpy as regular options, only providing more room for swelling breasts and bellies. Maternity bathing suits of the former category can often seem little different than regular maternity apparel or even ordinary sun dresses. Those belonging to the latter often appear like nothing more than simple bikinis and common one or two-pieces.

The most risqué designs even incorporate thongs and g-strings! Such is the state of maternity bathing suits in the post-millennial West, where motherhood has been acknowledged as sexy since the 1990s and pregnant celebrities can no longer grace magazine covers for shock value because maternity has been mainstreamed, right alongside female sexuality. But enjoying the beach while pregnant involves more than the right swimwear, as many activities should not be indulged, such as tanning.

The main concern involves overheating, of course (though premature wrinkling and the likelihood of skin cancer should be reasons enough, baby or no). And high temperatures cause the body to lose more water, and not simply due to perspiration, so there’s also dehydration to contend with. Naturally, people think that if they just watch out they can still indulge in a nice tan – but why take the risk? Physically rigorous activities are now encouraged, but being at the beach generally means being out of doors and under the sun. Again, while not an absolute danger in itself, there seems to be no reason why an expectant mother couldn’t simply wait until after her pregnancy to resume such activities.

Still need convincing? Okay, how about this: exposure to the sun might make you more prone to chloasma (full name, cholasma faciei, literally “the mask of pregnancy,” often better known as melasma), a condition whereby dark splotches appear on the face or forearms. Chloasma can happen to anyone, but seems to afflict women in particular, and especially when pregnant. Dark irregular patches commonly develop on the upper cheek, nose, lips, or forehead over time. Thankfully, the discoloration is only temporary – but why courts it in the first place? Treatment is available to hasten its fading or cover up its appearance, but hassles are involved, not the least of which is a strict avoidance of sunlight (except, of course, in the case of cosmetic cover-up)! Other than that there is no problem with boosting up the fashion no matter what the case or the situation may be. And there we have it, another addition to the thousands and thousands of different modest swimwear available for everyone all ages. Yes we can enjoy swimming but enjoying it with style creates better experience, who knows, maybe it is what’s needed to alter what happens in the future.

More Then Just Bathing. Hydro Massage Therapy Improves Our Mental And Physical Well Being

More Then Just Bathing. Hydro Massage Therapy Improves Our Mental And Physical Well Being

The health benefits of whirlpool bathing have been known and utilized for thousands of years.  The warmth of the bath water creates an environment of mental and physical relaxation that improves our overall health.  Hydro massage teamed with the buoyancy of the bath water helps mend injuries along with soothing the physical aches and pains of daily living.

Sports centers have used the whirlpool action for their athletes for decades.  Health centers across the country have included the benefits of whirlpool for their patients suffering from numerous health conditions, one of the most well known conditions being Arthritis.  All though whirlpools will not cure Arthritis, the severity of Arthritis is greatly lessened by soaking in a whirlpool bath daily. Birthing centers are also including whirlpools for mothers in labor.  The warmth of the bath water along with the massage of the whirlpool lessen the pain of child birth.  Studies now suggest that mothers using whirlpools have a less stressful birthing process, as do their babies.

What once could only be achieved through purchasing a spa (depth for soaking and jet positions) is now available in whirlpool bath tubs.  Manufactures like Jason International offer exceptionally deep bath tubs for total submersion in your bath water.  Along with the additional depth are stackable jets for full back massage, foot massage and neck massage.  No longer do you have to spend thousands of dollars for an outdoor spa when you can install a therapeutic bath tub in your home.  With outdoor spas you are subjected to the weather elements, whereas with a therapeutic bath tub, you have total control over privacy and room temperatures.  This allows you the option of using your whirlpool whenever you choose to do so.

The emotional benefits of a whirlpool bath tub are also to be enjoyed.  Soaking in warm water or turning on whirlpool jets provides you with a pampered massage at home, which simply feels good.  You may not suffer from sports injuries or have a physical condition that requires whirlpool massage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the numerous health benefits the whirlpool bath tubs provide.

What’s the big deal about bathing and bathroom safety?

What’s the big deal about bathing and bathroom safety?

Bathing is vital to our wellbeing. The fundamental purpose of bathing is to maintain health and physical well being of the body. While most young, able-bodied people do not think twice about taking a bath, bathing is more difficult, more time consuming and more hazardous for older people, especially for older people with disabilities. Most of the data available to me is nearly twenty years old, and in need of updating to take into account the rapidly aging Baby Boomer generation, that will most certainly increase numbers. However, my personal interviews with hundreds of seniors over the past year indicate that the issues are still the same, even though potentially greater in severity.

In the 1980s, the Gallup organization surveyed 1,500 non-institutionalized people over the age of 55. “Using the shower or tub” was one of the major problem areas identified by them for maintaining activities of daily living. The magnitude of problems older people experience while bathing and the seriousness of their situations, raise many important questions. Why do they continue to bathe? How difficult is it for older people to bathe? How safe is bathing for older persons with disabilities? Why do older people bathe in unsafe conditions?

Physiologically, bathing allows cleansing of the skin and removal of accumulated foreign matter. Bathing displaces dead skin, prevents irritations and rashes that would otherwise transform into infections, and washes away waste materials that can interfere with the normal functioning of the skin. Bathing allows people to: 1) maintain acceptable social standards of cleanliness, both appearance and olfactory and 2) refresh, revive, and relax through the washing process.

Bathing, like all forms of body cleansing activities, is habitual and ritualistic. It is laden with social, psychological and philosophical overtones. Philosophically, bathing is equated with cleanliness of body and purity of soul, and it reflects aptly in the popular phrase, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” People’s obsession to maintain a clean body is well known. Americans take, on average, at least seven baths a week. Since the 1960s, the rising sale of deodorants, anti-perspirants, and mouth washes supports the social emphasis for maintaining a clean body, and it reflects the cultural and aesthetic spirit of the society (Kira, 1966).

Cold water is always a better solution for bathing cats or kittens. Cats don’t mind the cold. Unlike myself.

Yet water should not be tooo cold when bathing a cat-  you know what I mean – not so freezing cold that your poor cat shakes and its teeth chatter… Just pleasantly luke-warm, like for a baby bath.

[2] What Should You Bathe Cat In?

Choose a shallow bathing tub that your cat can easily stand in. Deep buckets might cause cats to panic and feel as though they’re stuck in a narrow clastrophobic well.

Best would be a shallow plastic container or a small laundry bucket, that is safe for cats and not slippery.

We plan on introducing our cats to water in a gradual way and not throw them into a 6 foot/2m pool and have them get a heart attack from fright.

Place a towel around the dish so that your cat can stand on it afterwards and get dry. Also the towel aroung the cat bath will prevent your house from drowning under water. ;-D

You can also use a rubber mat for the bath bottom, so the cat won’t slip, but it isn’t a ” must have “.

If it’s a slippery tray, then the rubber mat is advisable, but if it is a plastic dish, then you don’t need to worry about it. Anyway, it’s a shallow cat bath so there is no risk.

[3] How Deep Should The Cat Bath Waters Be?

Start bathing your cat with just enough water to be above cats  feet.

For the time bathing kittens or washing cats, just place your cat in the tub and let cat play around in there. Cats will get used to the bath and think it is fun.

Tips For Playing With Your Cat In The Tub:

If you play with your cat inside the cats bath with a string, or with some other toy  your cat will enjoy bathing and want to get in there again.

Make it the place where you play with your cat with a certain item (like a mouse on a string or some kind of “cat bathing” toy.) you only use in bath. Your cat will be glad to jump in there and want to play with you.

Another cat bathing motivator is giving your cat a few yummy cat treats when he baths.

Next Stages Of Cat In The Tub

Don’t worry if your cat makes a mess. The towels  you places around the bath tub will mop up most of it.

Gradually you can begin to increase the depth of the water.

Beware: For most cat types, water should never be deeper than cat’s knees.

This should be enough water to give your cat a bath, without creating the fear of drowning panic in your cat’s mind.

How to wash your cat in the cat bath?

Don’t pour the water over your cat or dunk her inside, instead use a wet cloth and dab your cat with it over his or her fur while paying with it in the bath.

Some cats are amazingly expert swimmers, maybe you will have the next “swimming champion”, but don’t push your cat to be one…

Bathing and cleanliness during infancy and childhood

Bathing and cleanliness during infancy and childhood
