Child care is obviously very important part of family life. Not only does child care promote your child development but it also strengthens your child’s view of family and their community. Education and support are just two of the important functions provided by child care providers.

Again, obviously parents want what’s best for their children. They worry about the wellbeing of their childrne when placing their children in child care. Here are typical questions parents ask themselves–

Will my child’s provider like my child?

Will she understand my child’s moods?

Will my child be happy at day care?

Parents and child care providers should work together so parents are not so apprehensive. Providers should understand that working with the parents does not mean they should put up with delinquent behavior! Discipline is a important parenting tool and child care providers should have the same view about discipline. However, normally since parents spend the most time with their children, they should be the definitive source of discipline and teachers / child care providers should not feel discouraged when a issue isn’t solved immediately. Parents and providers need to team together and work to help children succeed and grow up to be the wonderful people God meant them to be!

Everyone makes mistakes. Granted, some mistakes are more significant than others and harder to get over, but they are a part of life. How individuals deal with those mistakes is significant to their self-esteem. Children who are taught from an early age to admit to their mistakes understand that it’s not a crime to make one, and they seem to have the ability to cope much better with them. They recognize that a mistake was made and admit the error. Most importantly, these children also develop a strategy to change the mistake and not do the same thing again.

The process of making and learning from mistakes is an extremely valuable life skill for everyone because learning involves risking. Every time children risk, they will not always succeed. But they tried something new and most likely learned from it as a result.

Children with low self-esteem deal with making a mistake quite differently. More often than not, these children use the experience to devalue themselves. Instead of looking at the error as an opportunity to learn, these children interpret the experience as a reason to quit and never try again. They view it as a devaluing and humiliating experience.

You can help your child cope with mistakes by first making sure they understand that everyone makes mistakes, even you. Own up to your own mistakes to teach them there’s no shame in making them. Make sure they understand that it’s okay to make mistakes. This presents a great opportunity to tell your child what you’ve learned to do differently the next time. Then, offer strategies to turn mistakes into learning opportunities. In the process, you can provide your child with an opportunity to enhance their self-esteem and accept responsibility for the mistakes they make. Help your child to realize that the mistake is the problem, and not them. Then help them develop a positive plan for the next time around, and what they’ll do differently the next time to avoid making the same mistake again.

Home Remedies for Colic – 3 Popular Ways of Relieving Your Baby Colic

Colic is a very common occurrence among babies or newborn. It is no doubt that you must bring your baby to visit a doctor so that he or she can be examined and treated accordingly. But there are various home remedies for colic in order to relieve your baby’s discomfort before being treated by the doctor.

Below are some of the simple and popular home remedies for colic:

1. Give the colicky baby a pacifier so that to help the baby stay calm. This is because infants or babies are used to having something in the mouth due to breast feeding. As the mother’s breasts cannot be there most of the time, pacifier can help preventing excessive crying.

2. One of the most overlooked home remedies for colic is the simple process of burping. According to experts, the amount of air going into your baby’s stomach and intestines can be reduced significantly if you were to let your child burp after feeding. This can be a very effective home remedies for your baby’s colic if done properly and regularly.

3. Giving the baby a warm bath can also help to relieve your baby’s colic pain. However, as this cannot be done everytime, the parent can put a warm bag on the belly or try massaging lotion instead. It will be a good idea to cover the pack with a towel since the temperature could be too much for the infant.

Other than the above home remedies for colic, there are other ways which include using herbal tea, boiled Fernel seeds and soothing the baby’s pain by rubbing some caster oil over his or her tummy. The above-mentioned home remedies for colic can be very useful if you are sure that the infant only experiences simple colic.

Baby blue: A woman’s tragedy

Everybody in this world goes through certain life experiences, which trigger him or her to learn more about it or to resolve it. But this can only happen if you are able to identify an issue or realize that it is an issue. One of the issues that many of the women experience and don’t know is Baby blue or post partum depression.

An interview with my patient gave me an insight that many of our females suffers from this tragedy “Baby blue” and don’t even know that it has a major impact on mother as well as for the infant’s development. My patient went through a post delivery period and she recalls that sometimes she had unusual thoughts and fears such as she felt if she’ll loose her child, she’ll forget her child in some shop, or she may harm her own child. These were very horrible thoughts that took my breath away. Sometimes she use to dream that someone has taken away her child or she is giving bath to her baby and suddenly her baby is out of her hands and gone inside the drain. After these kinds of thought and dream she used to become very restless, no sleep, she used to wake up even when a slightest noise is there. She became overprotected towards her child. Her husband many times commented that how do you know beforehand what does the baby wants? Because she was always making fuss about everything even telling her husband what to do and what not to do as if her daughter was only her property. After this interview I wanted to learn more about it that why she had these symptoms, what are the usual risk factors of it?

Baby blue or Post partum depression can happen a few days or even months after any childbirth, and not just the first child. It can be of mild and temporary form i.e. baby blue or postpartum blue as well as more severe that is psychotic form. In its mild form it is mostly treated as harmless unworthy of any treatment and thus neglected by the person herself or by the family members, which may lead to its severe form. According to Lusskin S.I & Misri,S Baby blue is characterized by feeling of changes in “sleep, energy level, appetite, weight, gastrointestinal functioning, and libido” are the most common symptoms of postpartum blue along with additional symptom such as “significant anxiety often with panic attacks, intense irritability and anger, feeling of guilt, sadness, weeping, fatigue, loss of interest in usual activities, overwhelmed or unable to care for the baby, feeling of inadequacy or failure as a mother and no bonding with the baby , which further exacerbates feeling of guilt and shame and leads women to suffer in silence”.Â

Te prevalence of Baby Blue in developing countries is increasing from 16% to 35 %. In Pakistan its prevalence is said to be very high. Several studies have been conducted to get the estimated prevalence regarding this topic in hospitals of Pakistan, but no overall statistics are found.

There are many risk factors of postpartum depression some of them are discussed here such as:

1) In post delivery period there is sudden decrease in hormones level which add up with the other risk factors thus causing postpartum depression. 2) Psychological factors also play a major role in postpartum depression. According to Rahman.A, “in many of the studies a major complaint reported by the new mothers was a feeling of `inadequacy’ regarding childbearing”. Further problems arise if mother is of low age. The childbirth trauma and change in their role itself gives stress to the young mothers. Therefore proper antenatal teaching is required during the visits to doctors and midwifes, even the husband should be encouraged to attend these session. 3) Rahman, A’s study in a rural community states that “Antenatal depression often precedes postnatal depression”. Over half of mothers who are depressed in the third trimester of pregnancy, continued to be depressed one year after giving birth. It is important for a health care professional to identify the signs of the depression in early pregnancy and do interventions, which can help in preventing postpartum depression. 4). The problematic relationship among husband and wife, violence by husband and Psychological and physical abuse especially during pregnancy, lack of empowerment of the women leads her towards emotional instability and distress, which can further add up to postpartum depression.

If we see our Pakistani women who are not very literate or illiterate and less empowered they are more prone to get postpartum depression. The woman firstly faces her husband who if not very supportive can be the cause of her emotional instability. She is further not able to take any decision but when the time comes for giving birth to the child she is expected to give birth to only male gender and not female. Not coming up to the expectation of her husband and in laws she is further tortured by verbal abuse or physical abuse. Living in joint family system where she is the only one who is taking care of the whole family, giving less time to herself, could add up to her mental stresses. It is necessary for a woman not to expect too much from herself. She should express her feelings with her partner. Should not get overwhelmed by the work and do one thing at a time. Get medical support if identifies this kind of emotions. It is necessary that today’s women should be educated toward her physical and mental health. But the question arises can she do anything for herself. Yes she can but she requires social support love and certain amount of empowerment to take decision for herself. The life partners can play a key role in not only helping in wife’s emotional stability but also in preventing other stressors in life which are making her more vulnerable to baby blue.

My recommendations are that further studies are required to be conducted in future focusing on prevalence and screening of baby blue. The husband’s role in prevention can be studied in great detail. Detection of women for developing postnatal depressive symptoms can be done during late pregnancy in antenatal care clinics. Finally I would like to conclude that the postnatal period is very important because of the impact of maternal depression on the infant’s development. By knowing the risk factors, symptoms can by identified early, proper antenatal teaching and extra support; love and affection could improve outcomes in both mothers and their infants.

Baby Acne

Baby acne normally develops on the cheeks, the forehead and the scalp. Rarely, this condition may manifest as blackheads or as back acne. This form is very common and normally appears about three to four weeks after birth. Although it is very rare for a baby to be born with acne, the presence of tiny bumps on the face of your new born is usually an unrelated skin condition. It is normally referred to as milia and is harmless. It usually disappears after a few days.

Although it is unclear what causes this condition, experts say that excess hormones stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce sebum which is in turn secreted in the skin. When the sebum is mixed with other dead skin cells, it results into the disease. In baby acne, the hormones are produced by the mother and are passed onto the baby via the placenta.

Acne normally manifests in babies after three to four weeks because it is only after the baby has been born that the excess oil will mix with debris and clog the pores. You should not worry when your baby develops acne because it is perfectly natural. It normally disappears on its own after a few weeks.

This condition is normally not dangerous but you can try the following measures to help clear the disease. Use baby soap to clean gently the baby’s skin at least twice a day, that is, in the morning and in the evening. Do not scrub because it may lead to further irritation. Use a soft towel to dry the baby after the bath. These measures can help clear baby acne and therefore you don’t have to go for medicated treatments

You’ve tried lullabies, rocking chairs, late night drives around the neighborhood and your baby still doesn’t sleep. At 3 a.m., your infant starts crying and won’t go back to sleep unless you bring him into bed with you. Your toddler gets up at 2 a.m. and turns on the TV— loud! Homework keeps your fifth grader awake past 10 p.m.And your teens are up until midnight and then sleeping through 8 AM algebra class.

When a child has sleep problems, parents— and even siblings— also suffer, both from sleep deprivation and worry.Children can suffer the same sleep disorders as adults. Snoring, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and other sleep disruptions in children have been linked to extreme moodiness, accidents, behavioral problems, learning disabilities and even Attention Deficit Hyper-activity Disorder (ADHD).

What’s Keeping Your Child Awake at Night?

Newborns (1-2 months):

Babies are not born with a pre-set sleep-wake cycle— their tummies organize their schedules. Newborns sleep 10½ to 18 hours a day, usually one to three hours at a time and waking when they’re hungry.

Infants (3-11 months):

According to the National Sleep Foundation, “Circadian rhythms begin to develop at about six weeks, and by three to six months, most infants have a regular sleep-wake cycle.” Infants sleep 9-12 hours, including one to four naps.

Toddlers (1-3 years):

Toddlers have figured out that things happen at night, and they don’t want to miss out. They’re also mobile and can climb out of bed. They want their independence, but also want to be with their parents. So it’s tough to get toddlers to sleep the 12-14 hours— including one good nap— that they need every day.

Preschoolers (3-5 years):

Good-bye afternoon naps! Most five-year-olds are up all day and sleep 11-13 hours a night. Active imaginations can trigger more nightmares and fears about sleep. And of course, TV and playtime are much more appealing than going to bed.

School-aged Children (5-12 years):

Serious sleep problems can begin here. School kids are busy and barely have 10-11 hours for sleep. Computers, TV, and videogames— particularly those with violent content— are sleep distractions. Junk food, caffeine, and stress can also keep school-aged children up at night.

Teens (13+):

More work, more play, and more socializing combine with stress and biology to make it difficult for teens to get 8 ½ to 9 ¼ hours of sleep. “Circadian Rhythms change in adolescence,” says Jodi Mindell, Associate Director of the Sleep Disorders Center of Philadelphia. “Teens’ brains and bodies are geared to stay up later at night and sleep later in the day.”

What Can Concerned (and Sleep-Deprived) Parents Do?

Know your child and the guidelines for how much sleep they need at every age. Trust your judgment about what’s healthy for your child. Most importantly, help your children to establish good sleep habits early in life. Sure, you’ll struggle through the first few weeks with your newborn. But at 3-11 months, infants know the difference between day and night and are on a sleep cycle similar to their older siblings and parents. The are also ready to learn to go to bed and to sleep through the night. Remember, however, that helping you infant to do this will take time.

What’s the Right Approach to Sleep Training?

This depends on your baby and your lifestyle. Some experts say it’s good to comfort your child to get them back to sleep and to even bring the baby into the family bed if it means you will all get back to sleep. On the other hand, there’s the “self-soother” theory. You may have heard of Richard Ferber, director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Children’s Hospital in Boston and author of Solve Your Child’s Sleep Problems. His approach, dubbed “Ferberization,” is rooted in the American Academy of Pediatrics’ theory that babies sleep best when they soothe themselves to sleep. Ferber suggests a loving bedtime routine, putting the baby to sleep awake and waiting before responding when the baby wakes up crying.

Rock-A-Bye Your Infant

Develop a Bedtime Routine:

The best nightly routines—bathing, feeding, calming and bonding—according to Laura Davis and Janis Keyser, authors of Becoming The Parent You Want To Be, are enjoyable for parent and child and should be consistent every night. Pediatrician Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby, recommends the “Five Ss—swaddle, shush, swing, suck (a pacifier) and hold your baby while he or she is turned on his or her side or stomach.” All the experts agree on one thing: to learn to soothe themselves to sleep, infants should be put to bed when they’re drowsy, but not asleep.

Create a safe, sleep-friendly environment:

Keep the bedroom cozy, but not overheated, quiet and dark. Choose a crib with a good safety rating and firm mattress. Take precautions to reduce risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by putting infants to sleep on their backs.

Encourage sleep:

If your infant wakes up at night, have a consistent response. If you pick up or feed your baby, always do it in the darkened bedroom. Your infant will respond to changes in light, and needs to know that nighttime is bedtime. You also need to decide if you will bring your baby into your bed, and stick to that decision.

Know when it’s time to call the doctor:

The National Sleep Foundation suggests that it’s time to call your pediatrician if your baby is consistently fussy, having breathing problems, snores loudly, or has daytime sleepiness and behavioral problems.
